Deb Van Schaack

I've been a school counselor at Mt. Abe since 2000.  My undergraduate degree is from Cornell University, and I earned my graduate degree at the University of Vermont.  I'm originally from Oswego, NY, but lived in both the Catskills of NY and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia before settling in Vermont.

My husband and I live in Starksboro, and I love living and working in the five-town community!  Both of our kids graduated from Mt. Abe; Jacob in 2007 and Hannah in 2009.  They each had their own incredible Mt. Abe experiences, and I'm grateful for our ever-supportive school community.

When not in school I share a passion for the outdoors with my colleagues Mary and Alan.  Hiking is my all-time favorite activity, especially long distance backpacking.  After completing the 270-mile Long Trail in 2007 I set my sights on something longer, and in March 2013 I took a leave from Mt. Abe and flew to Georgia to start the Appalachian Trail.  I started hiking north on March 8, and finished my journey of a lifetime in Maine in late-July 2013,  2,185 miles later.  Like to hike?  Let me know, because talking about hiking is the next best thing to actually hiking.
